Tom's Kids Book Recommendations

The Way Things Work Now Cover Image
ISBN: 9780544824386

Published: Clarion Books - October 4th, 2016

I have always loved David Macaulay’s THE WAY THINGS WORK, which describes how mechanical gadgets function through demonstrating the everpresent, basic physical forces that govern our world: gravity, kinetic energy, magnetism, etc. Now David returns with an updated book that begins with the simple machines that 2nd graders learn about (wedge, lever, screw, ramp etc.) and scales them up to exploded diagrams of lasers, computers, video games, autopilot, microchips and more! David’s books are perfect for your mechanically minded kids, or for anyone looking to while away an afternoon learning how our world works!

I loved P IS FOR PTERODACTYL, the delightful alphabet book for anyone looking to confuse the heck out of children learning to read. The author's newest picture book is NO READING ALLOWED: THE WORST READ-ALOUD BOOK EVER, which is one of my new favorites for the use and abuse of homonyms! Each page compares the vastly different situations one might encounter if they used two different words that sound alike, as the verbs “raised” and “razed” might result in widely differing stories! I enjoyed the clever use of language by two writers who seek to raise the level of discourse between grownups and tiny humans. Pick this up for the kids in your life, and a copy of yourself as well!

Find Fergus Cover Image

Published: Doubleday Books for Young Readers - November 3rd, 2020

A delightful search and find story with a sweet bear, FIND FERGUS offers a humorous distraction for any kid with spare time on their hands! Starting off simple, Mike Boldt has this bear try to hide himself on a blank page before taking encouragement and suggestions from the reader to lose himself in a crowd. I find this to be a really wonderful introduction to search and find books, perfect for a read through with an adult. My favorite part is that while you may quickly find Fergus on your first read through, the ending encourages readers to return again and again to find all the special characters in this charming read.

DEALING WITH DRAGONS is that tale of a very pragmatic princess that wants nothing to do with her duties, and abandons them in favor of a very unorthodox but exciting position as aide to the dragons. I think everyone can empathize with that sort of choice at this moment. Written as the start of a four-part series called THE ENCHANTED FOREST CHRONICLES, this has always been one of my favorite recommendations for young people looking for new worlds to explore. With a fiery female protagonist, many buyers might be more inclined to buy this book for a young girl in their life. While I encourage that, I also want to encourage boys to read this story, because nothing expands our horizons like recognizing ourselves in others and building empathy through fiction.
