A time traveling literary romance that is well worth your while. Beautifully written, epicly composed, this is a delicious feast of words, and one of my favorite books to come from 2019. Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone wrote a phenomenal book that I will read and reread. A little bit of sci-fi, a little bit of history, with a generous helping of sass and brilliant character driven storyline, this book is slated to be a modern classic for Science Fiction readers.

I love murderous protagonists with whom you can really sympathize! Murderbot, the eponymous serial character of Martha Wells’s phenomenal Murderbot series, has the free will that humans always feared machines would obtain. But rather than a murderous desire to destroy the pestilence of humanity, Murderbot just wants to watch its soaps and chill out. Funny, fast paced and well written, All Systems Red is a great little read, with 4 companion novellas and a full length novel.

Dealing With Dragons is a tale of a very pragmatic princess that runs away to find dragons. I think everyone can empathize with that sort of choice. Written as the start of a four part series called The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, this has always been one of my favorite recommendations for young people looking for new worlds to explore. With a thoughtful and logical female protagonist, many buyers might be more inclined to buy this book for a young girl in their life. While I encourage that, I also want to encourage young boys to read this story, because nothing expands our horizons like recognizing ourselves in others and building empathy through fiction.

The funniest book I’ve ever read about the end of the world. When an angel and a demon work to thwart the Apocalypse, situations both serious and hilarious arise. God said, “Let there be levity.” And there was levity.

One of my new favorite fantasy books boils down to the simple conceit: What if the Rolling Stones fought monsters? Building on this premise, Nicholas Eames brings the most famous fighting band back out of retirement for one last job. Kickass worldbuilding and a protagonist with a great backstory really rounds out this fantasy novel. Perfect for rock history enthusiasts.
