VELVET WAS THE NIGHT is hugely different from Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s previous novels, not the least of which is the complete lack of any sci-fi or fantasy elements. Rather, this is steeped in 1970s Mexican history, in the midst of strong political dissidence. We have Maite, a quiet unassuming secretary who just wants to read her romance comics. When her neighbor Leonora goes missing, she accidentally gets caught in the investigation. Then there’s Elvis, an unofficial enforcer for the government. He wants to find Leonora because she’s in possession of some incriminating items. Maite and Elvis are thrown together as they search, keeping personal secrets while also falling for each other. It’s a tantalizing slow build with the signature Silvia Moreno-Garcia touch for well developed characters and beautiful atmosphere.

Mulan meets THE SONG OF ACHILLES in this debut historical fantasy by Shelley Parker-Chan. SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN is an incredible narrative about choosing your own destiny, fighting against societal expectations, and being unapologetic about who you are. Heroine Zhu is clever and capable, and makes you root for her so easily. The bold immersive world Chan creates makes you forget that this is a debut! Plus? It's SUPER queer. What's not to like?

Family drama, interracial dating, a man who is scared of his emotion, and a woman who is terrified of betraying the rules of her family, this book is a classic “will they won’t they” romance set in the intricate world of Indian-American immigrant culture. Kiran, the protagonist, hears so much from her family about how she needs to marry well, especially since her sister shamed the family by marrying a lower caste. Meanwhile the love interest Nash has been stung by his absent parents and also seeing how the kids he treats are affected by broken relationships, causing him to clam up. When they team up to complete some bucket list items of Kiran’s, the chemistry is there. But will they act on it, with so much at stake? The sweet slow burn of acquaintances to friends to romantic partners is so well done and paced brilliantly. As someone who also married a non-Indian man, I found this book to be extremely emotionally relatable.

Neon Gods is an extremely satisfying retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth. From the fun world-building to the enjoyable romance, with the help of interesting secondary characters (the siblings dynamics between Persephone and her sisters!!! Hermes!!!!) it makes for a fun and compelling read. While definitely a contemporary romance with all of the eroticism that comes along with it, the world still gives a lovely callout to the Greek myths of old while updating it to reflect a very accurate mirror to our current society.

This book is not an objective take on white supremacy or an academic analysis of racism and oppression of BIPOC – and that’s exactly what makes it stand out. It's angry and demanding and commands you to sit down and listen to the topics discussed and analyzed. Though this was written specifically to people of Latinx descent, I often found myself nodding along with many of the experiences of being part of an immigrant family. I felt seen in a way that I often haven't when it comes to nonfiction books about race.
