LitTalk at Interabang Books

LitTalk at Interabang is a quarterly panel series led by Writing Workshops Dallas and hosted by Interabang Books, each led by a moderator and featuring three to four published authors from North Texas. Each panel is organized around a theme, and the panelists will discuss related topics on writing, publishing, and the book industry. The series aims to inform and inspire the DFW writing community and showcase the phenomenal talent and pool of published authors in the area.
Up next: Exploring Identity in Fiction. Readers fall in love with books, characters, and stories that they can relate to. Whether it's how characters look or their culture, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or abilities, sometimes we just need to see ourselves in the books that we read. In this second LitTalk panel, the following will discuss the role of identity in fiction and how they crafted their memorable characters:
Alex Temblador, author of the award-winning Secrets of the Casa Rosada, will moderate a panel that includes Julie Murphy, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the young adult novels Dumplin’ (now a film on Netflix), Puddin’, Ramona Blue, and Dear Sweet Pea (her debut middle grade novel); Rebecca Balcárcel, author of The Other Half of Happy (a Junior Library Guild selection that received starred reviews from Booklist and School Library Journal and was named a Top Ten First Novel of 2019 by Booklist); and Sanderia Faye, Hurston/Wright Legacy Award winning author of Mourner's Bench.
 Topics expected:
How to write realistic characters of diverse identities
Using personal experiences to craft characters, culture, and personality
The importance of diversity in fiction
Character growth in relation to identity
The state of diversity in the publishing world
Writing characters with identities other than one's own
 Stereotypes and identity
Each panelist on the Exploring Identity in Fiction panel will suggest their favorite books on writing and publishing. These books, as well as their own novels, will be available for sale and signing.
