Human-Centered Design: Past, Present and Future

A conversation about how we moved from the design of things to experiences by focusing on the people we are designing for. Featuring Kate Canales, Research Professor and Director of Design and Innovation Programs at Southern Methodist University and Krista Nightengale, Managing Director at Better Block Foundation.

Kate started her professional career in 1999 at the world-renown design firm IDEO. This period was an inflection point for the design industry, as methods of design began moving beyond the design of products and software, and into the design of human experiences in areas like healthcare and financial services. After more than 13 years as a design researcher and creative director, Kate was hired by SMU to launch a program teaching Human-Centered Design to students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. Along the way, she has become an expert in building creative capacity in people and organizations, and using design as a methodology to drive innovation.

Krista began her career in journalism at D Magazine and more recently helped launch Dallas Innovates, a news site that promotes Dallas-Fort Worth as a hub of innovation. A civic leader, she served as Executive Director of a leadership group aimed at empowering citizens to take action, and Executive Director of a literacy nonprofit that united the city in reading together. She joined the Better Block Foundation, a Dallas-based nonprofit empowering communities by reshaping the built environment, to help it grow, spread its story, and make the world a little better by showing communities how wonderful walkable/bikeable districts are.

Sponsored by the SMU Design Council and the Master of Arts in Design and Innovation at SMU.
