BEAUTIFUL SHADES OF BROWN

Nancy Churnin

Growing up in the late 1800s, Laura Wheeler Waring didn’t see any artists who looked like her. She didn’t see any paintings of people who looked like her, either. As a young woman studying art in Paris, she found inspiration in the works of Matisse and Gaugin to paint the people she knew best. Back in Philadelphia, the Harmon Foundation commissioned her to paint portraits of accomplished African-Americans ... and today her portraits still hang in the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., where children of all races can admire the beautiful shades of brown captured by the artist Laura Wheeler Waring.

Nancy Churnin is the author of multiple award winning children's books, including MANJHI MOVES A MOUNTAIN, THE WILLIAM HOY STORY, IRVING BERLIN: THE AMERICAN BOY THAT MADE AMERICA SING, and MARTIN & ANNE: THE KINDRED SPIRITS OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR AND ANNE FRANK. A native New Yorker, Nancy is a graduate of Harvard University, with a master's from Columbia University in the City of New York. She lives in North Texas with her husband, a dog named Dog and two cantankerous cats.
