A son or "boy" in conflict with his father's expectations of masculinity. These poems are a gut-punch of identity liberation. "Father in my room looking for more sissy clothes to burn." Jones will take you under.

With this fall’s 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution I’m looking forward to recommending some great contemporary novels depicting the event and the years that followed in its wake. MIKHAIL AND MARGARITA by Julie Lekstrom Himes is a fictionalized account of the artistic and amorous life of Mikhail Bulgakov, author of the Russian classic THE MASTER AND MARGARITA. Bulgakov was at once Stalin’s favorite writer and victim of his suspicious cruelty. Bulgakov’s love for the young and beautiful Margarita makes her an easy target for Stalin’s manipulation of the writer. A gripping depiction of great art colliding with political repression.

If you have ever thought that one person cannot move a mountain, MANJHI MOVES A MOUNTAIN will dissuade you. Dallas author Nancy Churnin gives us the true and inspiring story of Dashrath Manjhi, who toiled for years to cut a road through the mountain separating his poor village from access to jobs, schools, and the hospital so badly needed by his wife. This is a beautiful picture book that will inspire you to move your own mountain.

I've enjoyed returning to some forgotten classics lately, and E. Nesbit's THE ENCHANTED CASTLE especially struck me. It's a delightful story heavy with magic and that ultimate fairytale trope: what happens when you actually get what you wish for. E. Nesbit's voice is as enchanting as the characters in her book. I loved reading THE ENCHANTED CASTLE as an adult; it puts you in a childlike frame of mind.

There are many picture books about New York, and now we have children’s books tackling the tragedy of 9/11. The World Trade Center was many things to many people, and home to more events and activities than one could detail. One event, though, stands out, especially to anyone lucky enough to have witnessed it. When Philippe Petit threw a tight rope between the towers in 1974 and dared to walk across it, dance across it, for almost an hour, people stopped. They watched. For a moment, their day was changed, and maybe their life. This wonderfully illustrated picture book chronicles the preparation and the walk itself with accessible and mesmerizing storytelling. It is engaging for all ages, and a wonderful way to remember a singular day in New York.

This novel completely captivated me. Joan is a fascinating protagonist -- a writer and mother whose history, talents, and perceptions are so unique, yet her struggle to reconcile ambition with the demands of family is so familiar. Author Cherise Wolas reveals the intricacies of Joan’s heart and mind with writing so authentic and astute that Joan belongs amongst the most memorable characters in contemporary literature. I want to put this book into the hands of every fiction lover that walks into our store.

For a bit, I was only reading poetry, but Lee Martin's THE BRIGHT FOREVER pulled me away and into fiction. Think secrets of a small town, think voyeurs, think AS I LAY DYING. Here is a town discussing the disappearance of a neighborhood girl, but in the process opening up about its darkest truths. Listen.

This fascinating memoir chronicles one man’s journey growing up – and being lobotomized at twelve years old. Part medical history and part personal memoir, this book captures the history of a procedure and a person. His lobotomy was performed by the notorious Dr. Walter Freeman, who invented the “ice pick” lobotomy. Freeman later regretted the hundreds of lobotomies he performed and was an active advocate against lobotomies. Dully is a medical miracle and a testament to the human brain’s ability to reconstitute itself in spite of horrific challenges. Whether you are a doctor or someone who loves interesting stories, this memoir will keep you glued while giving you hope that we are capable of beating the odds. After all, our brains are remarkable things.

Claire Messud is one of our most talented storytellers. Her latest, THE BURNING GIRL, is a crystalline evocation of the deep friendships that develop between teenage girls, a bond unlike any other. Messud traverses the fraught alliances and raw emotions of high school, reminding us that these ordinary rites of passage can have extraordinary consequences. Messud’s writing is deft and immersive. Her character development, sharp and perceptive. The novel recreates the pain of first realizing that it is impossible to fully know another; that our self-narratives reflect how we want to be seen but not actually who we are.
