The holidays are here! With the cold weather (finally) making its way to Dallas, it's the perfect time to cuddle up with a blanket, a mug of something warm, and a good book. Here are our staff's recommendations for good reads for the season.
Pulitzer Prize winner Joseph J. Ellis returns with the perfectly formatted book on history and political discourse. What if we could ask the founding fathers their thoughts on our contemporary conflicts? Would we listen? Do their original words still speak to us? Were they hypocritical? Ellis takes on the premise of showcasing a founder’s writings against current global and national crisis. This is what history can do: it can pull the past and the present toward each other to make sense of what may feel impossible to understand. - Tyler Heath

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup
Pulitzer Prize winner John Carreyrou returns with this year’s true crime thriller where he takes on the failed Silicon Valley startup Theranos. Carreyrou gets incredibly close to the dismantling of what could have been another Steve Jobs if not for the fraud. A book you will not want to give up after you’ve bought it for someone else. This is what good reporting can do. Wow! - Tyler Heath

Masterful storyteller, Zusak, has returned after the long wait since the publication of his widely acclaimed The Book Thief. Bridge of Clay is an epic tale about a family of brothers, the past that still haunts them, and the bridge that will be built to save them. Zusak’s writing is as brilliant as it comes as he weaves his way in and out of the generations and events that brought this family to where they are. You will want to begin it again when you finish, just to savor his writing once more. - Lisa Plummer

Nico Walker’s Cherry almost reads like a William S. Burroughs book: gritty, aggressive, smart. Walker is still serving a prison sentence upon his return from fighting overseas and this novel was composed during that time (his author photo is his mugshot). Cherry takes on drug addiction, PTSD, the working class and war with vulnerability. The perfect book for someone wanting a challenge. - Tyler Heath

Miller is back at it again with another ambitious retelling of one of the world’s most beloved classics. Using the same epic style as the original text, we follow Circe instead of Odysseus for this tale. Spanning hundreds of years, we see Circe’s transformation from a young goddess to a reviled and exiled witch, banished to Aeaea. We get to see her dynamic motivations for every action she took in the Odyssey. Filled with resilience, independence, and heart, you will not want to leave this epic tale when it comes to its close. - Rhiannon Lomonaco

David Benioff's historical novel unfolds like a gritty fairy-tale. During the siege of Leningrad, a boy named Lev finds an ejected German pilot and rifiles the dead pilot's pack for food. Lev is captured by Soviet patrolmen and taken to the menacing Colonel Grechko for judgement. Grechko claims the pilot's body is Soviet property and finds Lev guilty of stealing from the state. The sentence is death. In a cold cell, Lev befriends Kolya, a young deserter who is also awaiting execution. Reprieve comes in an unusual form. Grechko's daughter is getting married and he want's her to have a cake. The war has made it difficult to collect all the ingredients. And so he sends Lev and Kolya out to find a dozen eggs, promising to set them free if they complete the errand. Lev and Kolya go into the starving city and behind enemy lines to search for eggs, encountering cannibals, black marketeers, and and German patrols. This is a terrific read. - Richard Bailey

Educated is my favorite new memoir about a young woman escaping her abusive family through her education, but also a brilliantly written reminder of how easily our memories can be twisted against us. Woven throughout with themes of home, memory and family, Educated is the best memoir I’ve read. If you try only one memoir this year, make it this one. - Tom Blute

Simply the best novel I have read this year. Wolas has a richly descriptive writing style and she weaves a fascinating story of a prominent family gathering to honor their father as he receives “The Man of the Decade” award in Palm Springs. Set over the course of one weekend, long hidden stories emerge that ultimately, and at a price, allow every family member to be free of long carried secrets. - Nancy Perot

In 2007, when a new edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary — widely used in schools around the world — was published, some forty common words concerning nature were dropped. Apparently they were no longer being used enough by children to merit their place in the dictionary. The list of these “lost words” included acorn, adder, bluebell, dandelion, fern, heron, kingfisher, newt, otter, and willow. Among the words taking their place were attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, cut-and-paste, and voice-mail--a powerful sign of the growing gulf between childhood and the natural world. Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris conjure back twenty of these lost words, and the beings they name, from acorn to wren. By the magic of word and paint, they summon these words again into the voices, stories, and dreams of children and adults alike, celebrating the wonder and importance of everyday nature. - Lori Feathers

Subtitled The Rapture of Brodie Moncur, this picaresque follows the life and loves of Scottish piano tuner Brodie as he navigates through fin-de-siecle Paris and St. Petersburg. More earthy than comparable novel The Gentleman in Moscow, this is a delightful and often humorous story and, according to those reviewers who are more familiar with Boyd’s works, a harkening back to his earlier novels. Since this is my first foray into his writing, I look forward to reading his others, especially Any Human Heart. - Brian Weiskopf

Rachel Cusk is a wise and compelling writer. Outline is the first book in a trilogy about a writer named Faye, who is overcoming loss. These books do not have a consecutive plot, but that hardly matters. Outline, like the books that follow, Transit and Kudos, are about bearing witness. They will quietly break your heart and remind you how fruitful it is to listen, really listen, to other people when they talk through their troubles and share their stories. - Richard Bailey

The Texas Food Bible: From Legendary Dishes to New Classics

Local chef Dean Fearing is nationally known, and his cookbook from The Mansion was a vast bestseller. This followup, an arguably better book, didn’t get the wide distribution it deserved when published and therefore not the same acclaim, but we mean to right that wrong! It should be easy after a look at these colorful pages. A strong candidate to be a gift for food- or restaurant-obsessed friends, especially after Dean signed all our copies at an event in downtown’s Klyde Warren Park in November. - Kyle Hall

In the wake of the #metoo movement Novey's novel is the perfect medicine. Those Who Knew explores the complicated nuances of power, gender, violence, race and complicity in an accessible way for any reader. The story follows many perspectives of the same incident the death of Maria P. As the reader follows their stories, the issue of complicity and who we should trust becomes more ambigious. - Mary-Louise Ryan

Tiffany's Table Manners for Teenagers
By
Walter Hoving, Joe Eula (Illustrator) , John Hoving
Published: Random House Books for Young Readers - March 18th, 1989
There’s a reason this has been in print for 50+ years, and it’s not just the cute size, the dust jacket in “Tiffany blue,” or the charming illustrations by the great Joe Eula (who’d have been as famous as his colleague Andy Warhol had he been just a bit more odd). No, it’s because this guide to table etiquette for teenagers is great for ANY-agers. The brief text is simple and clear, with just enough explanation of why this, not that. And like any good handbook about manners, it’s about creating confidence so we can all be comfortable, not about making pointless distinctions so somebody can feel superior. A truly invaluable little book - Kyle Hall

Kingsolver delivers another intriguing story filled with interwoven characters from different time periods that all circle around a crumbling old mansion. The author’s interest in the natural world is very prominent in the story and Charles Darwin is an important figure. Beautiful language and a thought provoking look at what “shelter” truly means. - Nancy Perot

Everything that we look for in a good book: compelling characters, original storytelling, writing that is rich and perceptive, and Samantha Harvey achieves these so completely that hers is not just a very good novel but a truly great one. Harvey brings to vivid life the fifteenth century village of Oakham and its colorful residents as they mourn the apparent death of the town’s wealthiest man. Narrated by the village priest, Harvey unfolds her suspenseful, psychologically-driven story through a reverse chronology of events that crackles with intrigue. With The Western Wind Harvey shows us just how satisfying a smart, beautifully written novel can be. - Lori Feathers

Continuing his fascination with explorers, like Percy Fawcett in The Lost City of Z, Grann has traded the green hell of the Amazon for the white desert of the Antarctic. In this small book, Grann recounts the history of Antarctic exploration through two recent expeditions to the South Pole, each involving Henry Worsley, British special forces officer and student of the great polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. Worsley shows his true mettle in his solo run to the pole and measures up in every way to his idol Shackleton. A great story perfect for the armchair adventurer in all of us. - Brian Weiskopf

This novel was one selected for our Signed First Editions subscription series and it is one of the best books I have read in recent years. Cherise Wolas’s beautiful language and brilliant yet subtle story structure tell the story of a loving, high achieving family gathering to celebrate their father receiving the “Man of the Decade” award for his humanitarian work. Dark secrets are revealed that ultimately lead to greater personal freedom for each family member.
