Why Kids Also Need Poetry

Article Type:

Many people don’t realize that poetry is accessible for children of all ages. From nursery rhymes to young adults experimenting with rap, poetry is an excellent way for young people to engage with literature! Here are some of the benefits to including poetry in your young reader’s library.

  • Poetry helps build early literacy skills. Rhyme, rhythm, and sound are emphasized in poems.
  • Poetry encourages kids to play with language and words. When reading poetry, they hear how words can be moved and stretched to rhyme, and when they write poetry, they’re doing the same! This also gives them an easy format to start exploring literary devices such as similes, metaphors, personification, etc.
  • Poetry gives all kids an outlet for sharing their thoughts, ideas, and feelings -- especially tweens and teens.
  • Poetry develops memory and brain power in the youngest of readers - the rhyming and repetitive nature of poetry lights up those temporal lobes.
  • Poetry in songs and rap often helps engage reluctant readers
  • Poetry is FUN. It lets children use their imagination and creativity while reading
