I am happy to say I heard this author speak at Interabang Books recently and was inspired to get her book. It’s a compelling story set in the Texas frontier days about a spunky young girl named Samantha Shreve who stalks the panther that killed her mother. Crook has a clever ear for Texas dialogue — actor Robert Duvall has already optioned her book for a movie and it should be a doozy.

Just imagine if Henry James had written a sequel to his classic, “Portrait of a Lady” to find out what happens next to American Isabel Archer after her ill-fated marriage abroad — that’s just what Booker Prize-winning author John Banville did. Fascinating to see a master taking on a master.

This is a guilty pleasure. I am a Tina Brown fan — so talented, so brash — so it is fun to read about her adventures in the back-stabbing magazine world of Manhattan. How she had time to keep a diary and attend all those lunches and dinners with famous people is beyond me, but I am savoring her droll descriptions by reading just a few chapters every evening.

The acclaimed biography of President Ulysses S. Grant by Ron Chernow of HAMILTON fame is next up — from all accounts it is a great read about a remarkable man; I am looking forward to diving in.
