I will be surprised if there is a better novel than Jamie Quatro's FIRE SERMON published in the US on Tuesday, January 9th of this year, an opinion that likely seems rash this early in the year but one is fully warranted. Quatro's depiction of Maggie's struggle to reconcile her religious faith with her lust and marital infidelity is visceral and alive with complexity and contradiction. This is a philosophical novel that does not sacrifice plot for ideas. The story is gripping and the pacing, pitch perfect. FIRE SERMON is a wholly magnificent achievement.

Death is inevitable but if you knew the date that you will die, would you live a different or better life? This question is at the heart of Chloe Benjamin’s original and thought-provoking, THE IMMORTALISTS, also released on January 9th. The novel is narrated in turns by four siblings, each of whom visits a fortune-teller and learns the exact date he or she will die. Benjamin unspools the riveting stories of how the fortune-teller’s omen creates a sense of doom and fated destiny for the characters: one lives life with reckless abandon, another with an obsessive urge to control everything about her numbered days. A sensitive and deeply satisfying novel that demonstrates that there is a grace and freedom in not knowing how much time remains to us to live and love in this world.
