Nancy's Must-Reads

Article Type:

My bedside table is piled high these days...but what a good problem for a book lover to have. Here are the books I'm most excited about these days.

Uncommon Type: Some Stories Cover Image
$26.95
ISBN: 9781101946152

Published: Knopf Publishing Group - October 17th, 2017

Mr. Hanks was a big hit at the Texas Book Festival so I picked up a copy of his short stories. I expected them to be clever and charming--I was not expecting such thoughtfully rendered tales that demonstrate a keen and sensitive observation of human nature. All of the character studies are fresh and original. I thought I would read a sampling and I have read them all.

Hallelujah Anyway: Rediscovering Mercy Cover Image
$20.00
ISBN: 9780735213586
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Riverhead Books - April 4th, 2017

I am a big fan of Anne Lamott's and am enjoying her recent, HALLELUJAH ANYWAY. I find her original and often irreverent take on deeply serious spiritual matters to be very refreshing and often quite profound.

Overload: Finding the Truth in Today's Deluge of News Cover Image
$24.95
ISBN: 9781538107218
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers - October 1st, 2017

Next to Anne, I have Bob Schieffer's OVER LOAD: FINDING THE TRUTH IN TODAY'S DELUGE OF NEWS. Mr. Schieffer spoke two weeks ago to a packed crowd at the store. His wisdom and experience offer some comfort in these troubling and chaotic times. This would be the perfect gift for anyone interested in the current state of politics and the media in our country (let's hope that is most everyone)

Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in Its Darkest, Finest Hour Cover Image
$18.00
ISBN: 9780812979350
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Random House Trade - May 3rd, 2011

CITIZENS OF LONDON by Lynne Olson. This is an oldie but goodie and my well read friend Henry B. tells me that if he had one book to recommend to everyone for the year, this would be it. My smart mother agrees. High praise indeed. A true story of Americans living in London during World War II who were instrumental in convincing Roosevelt to come to the aid of the British.

Lincoln in the Bardo Cover Image
$28.00
ISBN: 9780812995343
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Random House - February 14th, 2017

And I have just downloaded Booker Prize winning LINCOLN IN THE BARDO by George Saunders. If you haven't tried our Libro.FM audio books, now is a good time. My friend Barbara, who reads everything in sight, told me how much she enjoyed listening to this while walking or driving. Look here to see how easy it is to listen to audio books (while still supporting your local independent bookstore),

Happy reading!
