We created the Interabang Modern First Library when we first opened our doors, and it continues to be one of the important elements of our wonderful children’s department. The Modern First Library is our curated collection of young children’s books that we feel open the doors to new experiences, broaden horizons, teach lessons and take us on a journey of the imagination. They are timeless classics, both new and old that we feel will build a child’s library that they will love and treasure for years to come.
Each year, I have added new books to the collection and am happy to highlight a few new wonderful selections from the past year that deserve a spot among the other gems.

This lovely book deserves a spot in the Modern First Library as a timeless tale of an unlikely friendship between Scarecrow and Crow. The gorgeous prose is complemented by stunning illustrations that gently show the joy of acceptance, empathy and encouragement of others. This stellar author and illustrator trio have created a classic that I immediately fell in love with.

The wonder of what it is to be a collector of experiences- allowing us to relive the magic of a moment, the beauty of a sunset, the love of a friend, is a powerful notion that comes alive in this extraordinary new picture book. If only we could collect those magical moments and put them in a jar to take out when we need them most. In a delightful and endearing way, IN A JAR shoes us that we all have the power to do just that.

I love the message that this new addition to the Modern First Library sends, that we are all smart in different and important ways. Being smart at creativity, kindness, asking questions, climbing trees and making music are just as wonderful as reading, writing, spelling and math. This colorful and creative picture book beautifully shows us that we each have our own gift and to appreciate all the varied and wonderful ways we are special.
