Make This Season the Summer of LONESOME DOVE

What books should be on every Texans’ shelves? The question can best be bandied about while sitting around with friends enjoying a couple of Shiners, or perhaps a Tito’s and tonic with a twist. But since we’re here …

Until recently, my history pick would have been LONE STAR by Fehrenbach; now it’s BIG, WONDERFUL THING by Harrigan. In biography, THE RAVEN by Marquis James, about Sam Houston, hero of San Jacinto. In natural history, the classic GOODBYE TO A RIVER by John Graves. In fiction, hands down: Larry McMurtry’s epic LONESOME DOVE, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. If you’ve read it, you know. If not, you are in for a rare and exciting ride along the trail with Woodrow McCall and Augustus McCrae.

Reading the West launched a campaign to make this season The Summer of LONESOME DOVE, and the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association (of which Interabang is a member) chose McMurtry to receive the 2020 Spirit of the West Literary Achievement Award. As he mentions in accepting the award, he wrote LONESOME DOVE to better understand his own father, a cattleman “captivated his entire life with the West, in particular the Plains West.” Local author Ben Fountain, in a chat about favorite books and bookstores with Interabang’s Kyle Hall that you can enjoy here, mentioned that he keeps LONESOME DOVE close at hand, frequently rereading passages from it. With the rest of the summer ahead, we encourage you to dive into one of the best novels ever written, a great Western adventure and more, by one of our most esteemed authors, and make this your own Summer of LONESOME DOVE

Beyond LONESOME DOVE (which we offer in both paperback and hardcover editions) you can find many other titles by McMurtry in our display, including two that were made into very worthy movies, HORSEMAN, PASS BY (retitled HUD for the screen, starring Paul Newman and Patricia Neal) and THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (with Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd, among many others). Many McMurtry books have been reissued with cover photography by Laura Wilson, whose beautiful large-format photographic essay of a working West Texas ranch, WATT MATTHEWS OF LAMBSHEAD, is a perennial bestseller at Interabang.
