This is a favorite of mine since 8th grade summer reading. Luckily my mom helped me through it initially, and it turned out to be one of the many books I couldn’t put down and wound up taking into the shower. Perhaps rightly so, Jane Eyre gets slammed for its corny gothic themes, but you have to give it to Jane herself – she is waaaay ahead of her time. Jane has such a strong sense of self and she constantly refuses to accept unfair treatment by her aunt, headmaster and employer. Can you imagine Bronte writing this at a time when a girl had no rights at all – not to mention one who is poor, plain and with no connections?! Jane Eyre is entirely modern despite the gothic, because at its core – it’s all about a strong personality resisting the tide. Go get ‘em Jane!
