Interabang Books Joins Nationwide Celebration of Independent Bookstore Day: Saturday, April 27

Independent Bookstore Day marks its fifth year of celebrating independent, locally owned bookstores with festivities nationwide on Saturday, April 27, and Interabang Books is among the stores representing North Texas. (A list of 550+ participating stores in 49 states is online at https://indiemap.bookweb.org/ )

The author of AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE, Tayari Jones, is the 2019 Independent Bookstore Day (IBD) ambassador. Jones says, “Indie stores know what we want and need to read because they know us, as people. A writer is not a machine. A reader is not an app. We are human beings and so are the independent bookstore workers who show up each day and place books in our hands.”

In just five years, Independent Bookstore Day has become a springtime book-buying holiday, increasing book sales on a national level. In 2018, participating stores saw an average increase in sales of 200% on Independent Bookstore Day (the last Saturday in April).

Kyle Hall, general manager of Interabang, says last year’s event was record-setting at the store, then nine months old: “Our top three sales days were the day we opened, the day before Christmas, and Independent Bookstore Day. One of those days was about pent-up demand for our bookstore to arrive, one was about last-minute Christmas shopping, and one was about a celebration of local bookshops nationwide. That last day, the feeling of being part of an event that had readers pouring into bookstores all over the country, was and is very special to people who love books.”

This year, Interabang Books’ message to readers is to “unchain your reading” by shopping for books and buying them at a locally owned and operated bookstore rather than a chain store or mass market retailer. In the United States, more independent bookstores are in business this year than last – a statistic that has held true for several years, contrary to gloomy predictions. (The American Booksellers Association, a sponsor of Independent Bookstore Day with Ingram and Penguin Random House, monitors the industry data that indicates this.)

“At Interabang, we invite shoppers to stop in, enjoy some of our activities and refreshments throughout the day, meet our staff, and talk with us about books,” Hall says. “We hope people will have a good look at our selection of books and gifts, but more than that we hope people will chat with one of our booksellers. Customers can tell the difference at their locally owned bookstore."

Interabang’s lineup of activities for Independent Bookstore Day includes:

“Bucket List” inspiration kits for various interests, free to shoppers from 10:00 (while supplies last; quantities are limited).

Complimentary coffee, bottled water, and juice boxes.

Mr. Jeff’s Saturday Story Time (in Kids)

Exclusive “day of” merchandise created for Independent Bookstore Day by publishers and authors. These will be introduced and available only at participating bookstores: not before, not online, not “reserved,” and not in chain stores. Our supply of these limited-edition items (which depends on order fulfillment by the distributor) will be offered strictly first-come, first-served.

Cheers to books! We’ll serve complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks as you browse the store. Raise a glass to Independent Bookstore Day and keep talking to our booksellers about your favorites and theirs.

About Interabang Books: Interabang Books takes its name from the symbol that combines a question mark (an interrogative) and an exclamation point (a bang, in typesetting lingo). In suggesting the search for knowledge and the excitement of discovery, this punctuation mark conveys the spirit of our independent bookstore – and the sort of experience we want readers to have with their selections from Interabang Books. Opening day at Interabang Books was July 1, 2017.

About Independent Bookstore Day: Independent Bookstore Day began in California in 2014 and became a national event the next year. Its sponsors include Penguin Random House, Ingram, and the American Bookseller’s Association. Independent Bookstore Day (IBD) is produced by writer and former bookseller Samantha Schoech in partnership with the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association. Publishers and authors such as Neil Gaiman, George Saunders, Roxane Gay, Lauren Groff, James Patterson, and Stephen King have previously donated work in support of the event. www.indiebookstoreday.com
