On June 3, 2020, Interabang General Manager Kyle Hall sat down with Ben Fountain, the Dallas-based novelist and author of essays and short stories, for a freewheeling chat about books recently read, the books they love most (or frequently return to), and bookstores: favorites near and far, as well as the ones that made early impressions on each of them. Their hourlong conversation also includes Kyle’s example of how books have a way of pursuing the readers they’re meant for (his favorite book chased him for 20 years), the pros and cons of discount or rewards programs (all con, says Ben), the vital role of bookstores in our society, and a subtle battle between Kyle’s East Texas twang and Ben’s lilting Carolina accent. The booklist here includes most of the titles touched upon, including Ben’s publications.
