This book first came out in 1988, and has been a favorite of mine since then. It takes place in 1918, when young Ruthie and her father take a hike one summer up into the hills of their Appalachian home to select and mark the tree that their family will donate to their village church the next Christmas when Ruthie will also get to play the Heavenly angel in the church Christmas play. Before Christmas comes, Ruthie’s father is called away to war, so it is up to Ruthie and her mother to chop down the tree and bring it to the church on Christmas Eve. Beautiful messages about the special gifts that Chistmas brings: the gifts of love, generosity and family.

Rich, colorful illustrations accompany this beautiful story about generosity and friendship. Little Redbird goes searching for a place to spend the cold winter when she hurts her wing and cannot fly south, and nearly gives up hope of finding a warm place to stay when the kind Evergreens come to her aid. This is sure to become a modern classic.

This beautiful new picture book is a lovely reminder that as every parent sees the birth of their child as a blessing and a gift, at Christmas we are reminded of the promise, hope and wonder of the birth of a baby long ago on a silent night.

This new addition to the genre of Children’s Holiday books is special both for the lovely, heartfelt illustrations of the forest and the animals who live there, but also for the timeless tale of celebrating our differences, believing in ourselves and generosity. The spirit of the holidays shines through this beautiful book.
