You needn’t look past the first poem of BROWN to know Kevin Brown’s in his prime-- “Thataway” sets the tone of bittersweet, precise language and biting social commentary in the poetic lineage of Langston Hughes. Just as Maggie Nelson achieves in her collection BLUETS, which gets at the contexts and implications of the color blue, Kevin Brown interrogates the concept of “brownness.” This collection is startlingly ambitious, both in concept and execution. Brown wields tercets like a scimitar, sparring with subjects as wide-ranging and rich as baseball, James Brown & BB King, history/memory, and Southern weather. This might already be the best release of 2018. -Jack

In Cruz’s second collection THE GLIMMERING ROOM, she takes on the mind like few poets working today. Most of the poems take on her time spent in a psychiatric ward for her struggle with an eating disorder. I might classify the work as confessional, so if you’re a fan of Sylvia Plath, Cruz is your poet. Her vulnerability is unmatched, and sonically, she is pushing boundaries. Easily one of the most interesting collections I’ve read. -Tyler

When CK Williams passed in 2015, I felt the acute loss of an important guiding voice, like the death of a grandfather or grade school teacher. Williams is a “quiet” poet-- his cadence is meditative and reflective, delivering a continuous channel of anecdotes and irreverent asides. REPAIR, which won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, is my favorite of his many collections. Here, Williams hits the perfect balance between presence and recollection-- he lives on the border of the discarded and preserved. I love this collection. -Jack

One Big Self Cover Image
ISBN: 9781556592584
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Copper Canyon Press - April 1st, 2007

What was originally a collaboration with the photographer Deborah Luster, C.D. Wright’s ONE BIG SELF is the published text that accompanied the photos Luster took of prisoners within the Louisiana system. Wright’s book is a singular poem that weaves interviews conducted with the prisoners, prison protocol, and her signature Southern vernacular. A lyrical narrative exploring and giving voice to a population we have silenced. -Tyler

Published: Graywolf Press - March 7th, 2017

Winner of the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award, Layli Long Soldier’s WHEREAS will be remembered one of this decade’s great books of American poetry. Incredibly, Soldier writes in a swimming pseudo-legalistic form with the intention of laying down a case against history and language. I don’t know how to explain this collection any clearer than that. WHEREAS defies categorization-- it’s “about” Native American experience, but the collection is also concerned with more abstract questions: ancestral pain and displacement, and the weight of history in one’s day-to-day life. This collection is required reading in 2018. -Jack

Wade in the Water: Poems Cover Image

Published: Graywolf Press - April 3rd, 2018

Her first collection out as Poet Laureate, WADE IN THE WATER is an exploration of American racial tension and motherhood. Using various sources including the Declaration of Independence, letters of black soldiers during the Civil War and recorded entries of individuals’ near death accounts, Smith weaves voices from the past into a contemporary experience. She’s committed to pushing formal boundaries and rhyme, Smith’s command of the poem becoming more and more impressive. -Tyler

Ferlinghetti's Greatest Poems Cover Image

Published: New Directions Publishing Corporation - November 21st, 2017

In FERLINGHETTI’S GREATEST POEMS, an anthology published by New Directions Press, we get a cross-section of one of the great voices of the Beat generation, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Ferlinghetti’s known as a publisher and owner of City Lights in San Francisco, but this collection reemphasizes the power of his wonderful and expansive poetry. What’s really special about Ferlinghetti’s lifework is how uniquely he interacts with art and poetry across epochs, as captured in the last lines of his poem, “I Am Waiting”: “...and I am perpetually waiting/ for the fleeing lovers on the Grecian Urn/ to catch each other up at last/ and embrace/ and I am awaiting/ perpetually and forever/ a renaissance of wonder.” -Jack
