Edgy Fiction - A Look at Our Newest Table

Guest Article by:
Article Type:

I am not a patient reader. I am not a reader willing to give authors time to get into a novel. I want something immediate. Skip the lush language and give me something that sticks. This may make me a “bad” reader; I usually give up on books in the first 20 pages, but it’s who I am. Make something happen. This is why I am drawn to the darker side of literary fiction, perhaps the taboo. There’s a risk taking in subject matter that propels the work (whether handled well is a different discussion) and I want to see where they take the subject, hopefully not just for shock value. I want books that push and push. I want books you’d take to a beach in Chernobyl...if they had a beach. Lighter books are all good and well and serve a growing readership, but edgier books are just as important and should not be neglected. Our lives are certainly not well-tied up narratives where everything works out in the end, and we as readers should not confine ourselves to happy endings. I believe we can see our furthest depths in the subjects we want to shy away from; grow as readers and take some risks with these titles below featured this month on our Edgy Fiction table.
