As life has slowed in many ways in these past weeks -- despite our having much to contemplate and occupy our minds -- I find it more crucial than ever to use paths of human connection to still our minds and lift our spirits. One of the best ways to do that is through reading. Books connect us to people, places and worlds beyond our own, take us on journeys of the imagination, and give us opportunities to grow even while being still.

Children’s literature is a treasure trove of inspiration, giving us messages of hope, joy and resilience. Here are a few wonderful books to occupy the minds and spirits of the young people in your life. I highly recommend that adults read these, too. Even if you don’t have a child with you in your current isolated state, these books will give you a well needed pick-me-up.

We all want to believe in miracles. This heartfelt new tale takes its inspiration from the real-life story of the Friendship Train that arrived in Texas in 1949, a gift from the people of France as thanks to Americans for the train of supplies sent to the people of France to help them recover from the devastation of WWII. A young girl whose father has never returned from the war wants to believe a miracle will arrive on that train. This beautiful story will remind you that the connections of the heart cannot be broken.

When one of her family is injured in an attack by a hawk, she must face her fears and venture out into the world of creatures who walk on two legs to get him help. This beautiful tale is ultimately about friendship and family, and about finding your way in the world while being true to yourself.
