THE RESURRECTION OF JOAN ASHBY completely captivated me. Joan is a fascinating protagonist--a writer and mother whose history, talents and perceptions are so unique, yet her struggle to reconcile ambition with the demands of family is so familiar. Author Cherise Wolas reveals the intricacies of Joan’s heart and mind with writing so authentic and astute that Joan belongs amongst the most memorable characters in contemporary literature. I want to put this book into the hands of every fiction lover that walks into our store. --  Lori

The book I've read and loved the most this year is SMITTEN KITCHEN EVERY DAY. I've long been a Smitten Kitchen fan - the first book is still a weekly go-to in my kitchen. An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic Cover Image
ISBN: 9780385350594
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Knopf - September 12th, 2017

In a time when unusual memoirs abound, this one stands out for its unlikely combination of family dynamics and literary study. As Mendelsohn tells the story of Homer's epic in the intoxicating style of the very best professors, he embarks on an adventure of his own when his father turns up to take his class on the Odyssey. Because they had never been fellow travelers before -- theirs had been a relationship of keeping distances -- the journey these two take towards home is poignant and rewarding. --Kyle

In the Language of My Captor Cover Image

Published: Wesleyan - February 7th, 2017

Shane McCrae's fifth collection, IN THE LANGUAGE OF MY CAPTOR, begins with the voice of a black man caged in a human zoo. How can these poem's voices not call you closer? This is a true study of language and how manipulatively it can be used against the suppressed. -- Tyler

ISBN: 9780735211261
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Riverhead Books - November 7th, 2017

Juli Berwald’s new book is a surprisingly delightful and very readable read about jellyfish, their role in the delicate ecosystem of our oceans and how the author’s return to her career as a marine biologist allowed her to discover her true passion and purpose. Juli spoke at the store this fall and was a guest on Interabang Podcast. If you are intrigued by sea life and care about the future of our planet, this book will resonate deeply. -- Nancy

Fast: Poems Cover Image
ISBN: 9780062663481
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Ecco - May 2nd, 2017

This collection is visually, linguistically, and thematically startling. Graham writes in tremendously sprawling and ambitious lines about technology, memory, and the glories and pitfalls of the modern world. The book itself is beautiful, with a monograph-style cover and wide pages with the real estate for Graham’s work. It’s been a while since a collection of poetry excited me like this. FAST is the most realized book of poetry of 2017. -- Jack

Mozart's Starling Cover Image
ISBN: 9780316370899
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Little, Brown Spark - April 4th, 2017

Certainly one of the quirkier books of the year, this charming narrative is difficult to categorize, but engrossing nonetheless. Fueled by the knowledge that Mozart kept a pet starling who learned to sing his music, Ms. Haupt, a bird lover, rescues a baby starling and raises it in her home. The Haupts are enthralled by the bird and try to teach it Mozart's works but to no avail. However, the bird, Carmen, begins to imitate them and some of their household appliances. This is an enchanting book, about Mozart, music, language, birds, ecology, and philosophy, and how intelligence in the animal kingdom is not so easy to quantity. Beautifully written. -- Carlos
