Battles, elections, and inventions aren’t the only way history is made. I love books devoted to 20th-century pop culture because of the window they offer into our shared past. (Popularity is more fleeting these days and has less of a lasting impact. Discuss … with me.) I pick up other recent nonfiction, too, but the fiction on my list usually is not current—I tend to read fiction after it has shown some staying power. I also tend to reread my favorites, which leaves me always feeling behind, but what reader doesn’t feel behind?
