Meet Brian

A quote from Alexander Pope from my undergrad days has stayed with me throughout my life and sums up my idea of a good book: “What oft was thought but ne’er so well express’d.” I like to read novels that aren’t afraid to explore big, universal themes in big ways, which is why I love Dickens, Twain, and Melville, but also why I adore Russo, Tartt, and Carey. I’m just the opposite when it comes to nonfiction, where I like to see the bit players on the great stage of history—the individual soldier, scientist, or spy—influence the outcome of major events or make an impact on society.
